'The Silkworm Goddess' Lino Print

‘The Silkworm Goddess’ (Ink on Paper, 2026) is the first print in a twelve-part lino series shaped around the myths embodied through the festivals of the Chinese lunar calendar.

This piece is dedicated to the Horse-Headed Girl or Silkworm Goddess, a folktale first recorded between 265–420 CE (Jin dynasty) that honours China’s ancient relationship with sericulture.

It tells the story of a young woman who forms a deep kinship with a white stallion. Suspicious of their intentions, her father kills the horse and hangs its skin as a warning. That night, the hide wraps around the heartbroken girl and carries her into the dark. The next morning, villagers seeking the girl come across a giant white cocoon hanging from a mulberry tree; when it opens, the Silkworm Goddess emerges, riding a white stallion across the sky. Granted divinity by the Jade Emperor, she becomes humanity's guide in the making of silk. A story of friendship, patriarchal paranoia, and female autonomy, where freedom prevails.
